Troubleshooting: DialupAtCost SPAM prevention and how you avoid being blacklisted

DialupAtCost uses various techniques to reduce or eliminate SPAM from your email. Described below in detail is E-mail Verification (BoxTraper), Realtime Blocking Lists (RBLs) and blocking port 25.

    E-mail Verification (BoxTrapper)

Briefly, BoxTrapper protects your Inbox from spam by forcing all people not on your white list to reply to a verification email before they can send mail to you. This is an effective way to make sure only people you "approve" can send you email. Spam will not be able to enter your Inbox without prior approval from you as the white list manager.

For instructions on how to enable BoxTrapper, see support page E-mail Verification (BoxTrapper).

    Realtime Blocking Lists (RBLs)

DialupAtCost and other ISPs in general use Realtime Blocking Lists (RBLs) to block SPAM. They work by identifying IP addresses from which SPAM is sent, and then add the IP addresses to the RBL lists. The lists are public and shared among many servers.

Sending E-Mail (port 25 is blocked)

In order to prevent DialupAtCost IP addresses from becoming blacklisted, we block port 25 which prevents dial-up clients from sending e-mail directly to servers using the SMTP protocol. Instead, dial-up clients must relay their e-mail through secure SMTP servers on an alternative port or via SSL encrypted communication. You benefit from using an IP address that is kept clean of SPAM, and so the e-mail you send will avoid being blacklisted as SPAM.

    Open Relays

DialupAtCost does not provide an open relay for sending e-mail, since they are known to be conduits for SPAM. Legitimate e-mail sent through open relays is often mistaken for SPAM and deleted. Instead you must either have an e-mail address with DialupAtCost or you must contact your e-mail provider to use their mail server for relaying e-mail. Be careful what hosting company or e-mail provider you choose, as not all providers will allow you to relay e-mail by secure means.

Choosing an e-mail or hosting provider

If you require help, DialupAtCost can recommend hosting that will protect your e-mail from SPAM and avoid your e-mail from being blacklisted as SPAM. Contact sales@dialupatcost.ca for more information.
