Guide to Configure Macintosh System 9.2.x and earlier
Remote Access PPP for a Dial-Up Connection
This document describes the configuration of Remote Access PPP, formerly known as Open Transport PPP.
Information about Remote Access PPP
Remote Access PPP is the PPP dialer developed for Apple's Open Transport networking software. Remote Access PPP started out as Open Transport PPP in MacOS revisions under 8.5. Configuration of both Remote Access PPP and Open Transport PPP are similar.
Remote Access PPP is pre-installed on new and reconditioned machines that have System 8.0 to 9.2.x factory loaded.
Minimum requirements for the first version of Open Transport PPP are: a 68040 processor, System 8.0 and Open Transport 1.1.2. Later requirements are based on overall requirements for the specific version of MacOS.
Recognizing Remote Access or Open Transport PPP
Remote Access/Open Transport PPP installs two Control Panels into the System Folder: Control Panels.
The Modem Control Panel:

The Remote Access Control Panel or PPP Control Panel:

The Remote Access control panel will be found in iMac models using System 8.1, and other models using System 8.5 and above. All other operating system versions will use the PPP control panel.
To use Remote Access PPP or Open Transport PPP, you must:
- Configure the Modem control panel.
- Configure the TCP/IP control panel.
- Configure the Remote Access or PPP control panel.
Configure the Modem Control Panel
- Open System Folder > Control Panels folder > Modem Control Panel.
- In the Connect via pop-up menu, choose the port to which the modem is connected.
- In the Modem pop-up menu, choose the appropriate modem.
- Leave the radio buttons set to the default settings of On and Tone.
- Close the Modem control panel. Save if prompted to do so.
Configure TCP/IP
- Open the System Folder > Control Panels folder > TCP/IP control panel.
- In the TCP/IP configuration window, set the panel to the following:
- Connect via: PPP (Important: If PPP is not listed, then Remote Access PPP has not been properly installed. Try reinstalling Remote Access PPP)
- Configure: Using PPP Server
- The IP address, subnet mask and router address will be supplied by server.
- Click once in the Name Server Addr. field. Enter the name server address 67.43.1.110.
- Click the close box in the upper left hand corner of the TCP/IP window. Click Save when prompted.
Configure PPP for a PAP Connection
All Project CONNECT and Missouri Express modem pools use PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) for user authentication. No script is needed with a PAP Connection.
- Open the System Folder > Control Panels folder > Remote Access or PPP Control Panel. If the configuration fields cannot be seen in the Remote Access Control Panel, click the small triangle next to Setup.
- In the control panel, make sure Registered User is selected. Enter the Username you received as part of the signup process in the Name field.
- Enter the password and make sure the Save Password box is checked.
- In the Number field, enter the access number you received as part of the signup process, including any needed prefixes or area codes. If a pause is needed for prefix dialing, add a comma between the prefix and the main number. Call waiting should be turned off with the proper prefix, usually *70 followed by a comma to create a pause in dialing.
- Click the close box in the upper left hand corner of the Remote Access or PPP window. Click Save when prompted.
Check the Connection
- From the Apple Menu, select Control Panels, then the the PPP or Remote Access control panel.
- Click Connect.
- When prompted, enter the password.
- If the connection is successful, the Connect button will change to Disconnect.
- Check the connection by running an Internet application.
- To end the dial-up session click Disconnect.
Modems Not Included in Apple's OT PPP Software
Remote Access PPP and Open Transport PPP use individual modem scripts (CCL scripts) that are stored in System Folder\Extensions\Modem Scripts on the hard drive. Extra modem scripts not needed in the configuration of the
modem can be deleted. If a script has been deleted, it may be possible to install it from the system software installer.
Some modem manufacturers will provide scripts for Remote Access PPP. Look on the manufacturer's website or contact the manufacturer's technical support department.
Some 56K Modem Scripts are available from 56k.com - 56K Modem Init Strings and Drivers page at: http://www.56k.com/inits/.
