Guide to Configure Windows 95, 98, ME and 2000 using Internet Connection Wizard

This document contains instructions to configure dial-up access using the Internet Connection Wizard on Windows releases 95, 98, ME and 2000 having at least Internet Explorer 5 or higher installed. For Windows XP, see Windows XP configuration guide). No support is given for Windows 3.11 running on DOS. If running Internet Explorer 4, then you should find the instructions similar enough to follow along. You should upgrade to at least Internet Explorer 6 for security and compatibility reasons. This document assumes you have installed Windows with all the default components and have a properly configured modem already installed.

    Information about Internet Connection Wizard

The many versions of Windows all have slightly different default settings and locations for configuration options. The most consistent method of configuring dial-up connections is by use of the Internet Connection Wizard which provides a common interface across most versions of Windows, and more importantly does the configuration correct with minimal post modification. Similarly, the Internet Options found in the Control Panel has also remained the same since Internet Explorer 5 and newer (though Internet Explorer 4 is very similar). In most cases, these tools contain all the functionality required to get connected to the internet. So it makes sense to start here and only venture further if required.

Start the Internet Connection Wizard through Internet Options

    1. Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel.

    2. Double click on Internet Options icon: Internet Options Icon

    3. On the General tab, enter the Home page "http://home.dialupatcost.ca/", and then click on the Apply button to save the change.

    4. Switch over to the Connections tab, and remove any old connections you no longer require. Then click on the Setup button at the top right to start the Internet Connection Wizard.

    3. In order to completely control how the computer dials, we recommend removing the check from the box Dial using area code and country code, thereby forcing the computer to dial exactly what appear in Telephone number field. Enter the access number you received as part of the signup process in the Telephone number field. Include any required dialing prefixes or area code. If a pause is needed for prefix dialing, add a comma between the prefix and the main number. Call waiting should be turned off with the proper prefix, usually *70 followed by a comma to create a pause in dialing. When done, click on the Next button.

    4. Enter the username and password you received as part of signup process, then click on the Next button.
