This document will guide you through configuring dial-up access in Windows XP using the New Connection Wizard. For Windows 95, 98, ME or 2000, see Guide to Configure Windows 95, 98, ME and 2000 using Internet Connection Wizard). No support is given for Windows 3.11 running on DOS. This document assumes you have installed Windows XP with all the default components and have a properly configured modem already installed.
Windows XP broke with tradition and introduced a new user interface and locations to find functions. For those familiar with Windows 2000, the transition was easy. Like Windows 95, 98, ME and 2000, you can still access Internet Options from the Control panel, though you may have to Switch to Classic View to bring back the same familiar options from Windows 2000 and previous. The other significant change is the New Connection Wizard which replaces the Internet Connection Wizard. Though Windows XP is somewhat different, the major pathways remain the same.
Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Depending on mode, you may find the Control Panel directly off the Start button.
Double click on Internet Options icon: ![]()
You may have to Switch to Classic View if unable to find Internet Options
On the General tab, enter the Home page "http://home.dialupatcost.ca/", and then click on the Apply button to save the change.

Switch over to the Connections tab, and remove any old connections you no longer require. Then click on the Setup button at the top right to start the Internet Connection Wizard.

Simply click on the Next button to continue.

Choose the first option to Connect to the Internet, then Next button.

Choose the second option to Set up my connection manually, then click on the Next button.

Choose the first option to Connect using a dial-up modem, then click on the Next button.

Enter an appropriate ISP Name, such as "DialupAtCost". The connection will be given this name. When satisfied, click on the Next button to continue.

Enter the access number you received as part of the signup process in the Phone number field. Include any required dialing prefixes or area code. If a pause is needed for prefix dialing, add a comma between the prefix and the main number. Call waiting should be turned off with the proper prefix, usually *70 followed by a comma to create a pause in dialing. When done, click on the Next button to continue.

Enter the username and password you received as part of signup process, then click on the Next button.

Click on the Finish button to complete the Internet Connection Wizard. You are now ready to connect to the internet.

Normally, Windows XP will require returning to Internet Options, and then on the Connections tab change the setting from Never dial a connection to Always dial my default connection. You may also need to set the newly created connection to be default.

You are now ready to connect to the Internet.
