    1. Where can I find a procedure for installing SlipStream Web Accelerator on my computer?

Click on Windows Installation Guide for detailed instructions.

    2. During installation, a dialog appears warning that email acceleration and FTP acceleration are disabled because another Layered Service Provider (LSP) was detected.

This dialog is a warning stating that email acceleration and FTP acceleration will not be installed on this computer due to a software conflict.

However, the Web acceleration will still work properly. If you would like to have email acceleration and FTP acceleration, the other LSPs must be removed followed by a re-installation of SlipStream Web Accelerator.

    3. Why am I not able to connect to the remote service?

This problem usually results either a yield sign or a crossed sign for the SlipStream icon in the Notification Area.

If you see a yield sign as shown below...

      SlipStream Systray Icon - Yield

Please ensure that you have the correct server name, and server port number for your connection settings. Also please make sure that you have an active internet connection and your server is currently available.

This might also be caused by the High Speed Auto-Detection feature. SlipStream Web Accelerator will not connect to the server once an active high speed connection, such as DSL or cable modem, is detected.

If you see a crossed sign as shown below...

      SlipStream - Systray Icon Disconnected

Please make sure that you have entered the correct username and password in the SlipStream Web Accelerator connection settings. You can find and verify your SlipStream username on the Account Management page of your DialupAtCost account.

If the problem persists, please contact support@dialupatcost.ca for further assistance.

    4. Is my firewall preventing SlipStream from connecting?

SlipStream will work properly with most firewalls. You may need to open for ports 5400 and 7000 on your firewall for SlipStream to connect. Port 7000 is used to connect to DialupAtCosts acceleration server and port 5400 is for the proxy server that SlipStream makes available locally.

    5. Why can't I right-click on an image to get the Show Original Image?

The Show Original Image option is available only if you browse with the following Web browsers:

      • Internet Explorer 5.0 and later
      • Firefox 1.0 and later
      • Mozilla 1.7.3 and later
      • Netscape 7.2

Some Web sites disable the ability to right-click using Javascript. On other sites, the image in question may be a background image. To view the full quality image under these conditions, change the Image Setting to Full Quality and press Ctrl-Refresh in Internet Explorer. Please note that Internet Explorer must be launched after SlipStream is started in order to have Show Original Image as a menu option.

    6. Why can’t I load/open some specific Web sites when the Accelerator is enabled?

The Web sites may be blocked by the Popup-blocker component of SlipStream Web Accelerator. Please disable the “Block Floating Flash-ads” option in the Popup-blocker settings. If the problem persists, please add the Web site to the Popup-blocker White list.

    7. Why is Netscape/Mozilla not working with SlipStream Web Accelerator?

SlipStream Web Accelerator works with Netscape 7.0® and later. The primary reason why the Netscape®/Mozilla® browsers are not working with SlipStream Web Accelerator is that the proxy setting is not updated properly. Please make sure that the Netscape®/Mozilla® browsers, including the quick launch located in the system tray, are launched after SlipStream Web Accelerator is enabled.

Please do not attempt to stop/disable SlipStream Web Accelerator while you're browsing. Always leave it on for the entire time that you're browsing. If SlipStream Web Accelerator is working properly, the SlipStream icon (in the system tray) should be flashing/changing colour when you visit any Web sites.

Netscape/Mozilla might not function properly if there are multiple versions of Netscape/Mozilla installed on the same computer. To solve this problem, please uninstall any old version(s) of Netscape/Mozilla and reinstall SlipStream Web Accelerator.

An alternative solution is to configure the proxy settings manually.

    8. What are the Proxy Server settings for the SlipStream Web Accelerator?

The Proxy Server should be set to localhost or 127.0.0.1 (either should work), and port 5400.

    9. How can I manually configure my proxy settings to use SlipStream when browsing with Netscape?

With SlipStream Web Accelerator enabled, please open the Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Proxies window in Netscape 6/7® or Tools > Options > General > Connection Settings... window in Netscape 8® and set the HTTP Proxy as 127.0.0.1:5400. Please note that if you do this, you must remove these proxy settings when you wish to browse without SlipStream Web Accelerator.

    10. Why is Opera not working with SlipStream Web Accelerator?

SlipStream Web Accelerator works with Opera version 8.0 or later. For other versions, you must configure Opera's proxy settings manually. Please open the Preferences window in Opera, go to Network, and then click on Proxy Servers. Set the HTTP Proxy as 127.0.0.1 port 5400. Please note that if you do this, you must remove these proxy settings when you wish to browse without SlipStream Web Accelerator.

      Opera Proxy Settings

    11. Why do some Java-applets (such as certain games on www.pogo.com) not work?

Older versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cannot display certain image types (such as 'PNG'). To fix this problem, simply change your Image Setting to the maximum quality level or upgrade to the newest JRE.

    12. When SlipStream Web Accelerator starts, a dialog appears warning that another application is using port 25, port 110, port 143, or FTP port.

By default, SlipStream Web Accelerator listens to 127.0.0.1:25 and 127.0.0.1:110 in order to accelerate SMTP and POP3 traffic. This warning shows that another application on the computer is listening to either one of these ports, which causes a conflict.

      Opera Proxy Settings

However, the Web acceleration will still work properly. If you would like to have email acceleration, you need to disable the application that is listening to the specified port(s).

    13. How do I remove the SlipStream Web Accelerator from my computer?

Click here for detailed uninstallation instructions. There will be a dialog warning you to close all the other application windows. If you have done so, please proceed with the uninstallation.
